Inclusive Growth
The dismantling of political barriers and redressing of historical injustices have paved the way for people from previously disadvantaged communities to become grape farmers and winemakers in the Cape winelands. Historically, these communities provided the essential labour that built the industry. Increasingly, they are gaining ownership in the means of production.
The wine industry currently provides employment for over 270 000 people, both directly and through wine tourism. In the Western Cape province, the sector supports over 245 128 jobs, which contribute to a total household income of R18.8 billion.
Talented entrepreneurs continue to explore business ownership within the wine business cluster. Through various means, people of colour have become business owners in the wine industry, reflecting diverse dimensions to our rich offering.
South African wine producers are committed to responsible industry practices. Nearly all contribute voluntarily to Aware.org, an organisation promoting responsible alcohol use across the wine, spirits, and beer industries.
